Elder Abuse

Why Elder Abuse Prevention Matters

Elder abuse can take many forms, including:

Emotional or psychological abus, Financial Exploitation, Physical Harm, Neglect, Coercion and Control, and Misuse of Power of Attorney

In rural communities like Sundre, older adults may face additional barriers such as isolation, limited transportation, stigma, and fewer accessible services. Research across Canada shows that elder abuse is often underreported — especially financial and emotional abuse — and that community awareness is one of the strongest protective factors.

We believe prevention begins with connection, education, and coordinated response.

What We Are Doing in Sundre

🟣 Community Education & Awareness

We host workshops, public presentations, and Seniors Fairs to raise awareness about warning signs, prevention strategies, and available supports. We integrate elder abuse awareness into our intergenerational programming to challenge ageism and build mutual respect across generations.

Coordinated Community Response (CCR)

Sundre SPRUCE works collaboratively with community partners to strengthen a coordinated response model in our region. Our goal is to reduce gaps in service and ensure older adults receive timely, compassionate support.

🟣 Social Prescribing & Early Intervention

Through social prescribing initiatives, we connect seniors experiencing isolation, stress, or vulnerability to meaningful community programs, wellness supports, and trusted networks. Social connection reduces risk factors linked to mistreatment and neglect.

Support Navigation

We help older adults and families understand available provincial supports, reporting options, and confidential pathways for help. When appropriate, we guide individuals toward resources such as: Alberta Health Services, Alberta Seniors, Community and Social Services, orSeniors Abuse Help Line.

Our approach is rooted in:

  • Dignity
  • Trauma-informed practice
  • Confidentiality
  • Community partnership
  • Empowerment, not paternalism

We recognize that older adults have the right to make their own decisions, even difficult ones. Our role is to provide information, reduce isolation, and strengthen protective networks.

Recognizing the Signs

Some common indicators of elder abuse may include:

  • Sudden financial changes
  • Withdrawal from activities or relationships
  • Unexplained injuries
  • Fearfulness around a caregiver or family member
  • Changes in legal documents
  • Poor living conditions despite adequate income

If something feels wrong, it is worth having a conversation.
